Drug or Alcohol Misuse in Pregnancy
Drug and alcohol misuse in pregnancy is managed by the Multi-Agency Pregnancy Liaison and Assessment Group (MAPLAG).
This is a Sheffield Safeguarding Children Board (SSCB) group, which meets to discuss issues around women who experience difficulties with drugs or alcohol use in pregnancy.
Why do MAPLAG meetings take place and how often?
- Fortnightly meetings
- To monitor the progress of pregnant women, their partners and their unborn babies
- To make recommendations about the level of risk in respect of child protection issues and women’s health
- To replace automatic referral to Children's Social Care
- To comply with current legislation for the protection of Children (Children Act 1989 / Children Act 2004)
- In accordance with the South Yorkshire Safeguarding Children Boards' Child Protection Procedures 2007
Who refers clients to MAPLAG?
Pregnant women with drug or alcohol misuse problems will be brought to MAPLAG by the Specialist Midwife in Drug and Alcohol Misuse.
Who attends the meetings?
Representatives from key agencies attend. These include:
- A representative from the SSCB
- A Specialist Substance Misuse Social Worker
- A Specialist Midwife in Drug and Alcohol Use (Care Coordinator)
- A Specialist GP
- A Specialist Liaison Health Visitor
- A senior Social Work Practitioner from the Jessop Wing Children's Social Care
