About the Substance Misuse Project

Since its conception in 1999, the Substance Misuse Development Project has had a considerable impact on improving multi-agency work in relation to substance misuse and its effects on children and their families.

The project primarily focuses on the following:

  • Delivering multi-agency training and single-agency training in relation to parental substance misuse and safeguarding the welfare of children

  • Producing and implementing local protocols and inter-agency guidance in response to local and national initiatives ie. Local Child Protection policies and procedures and findings from Hidden Harm 2003.  To find more details of Hidden Harm please visit the Tackling Drugs Website.

  • Managing a confidential database recording information relating to children living in households where there is substance misuse to help research local activity and assist in planning

  • Increasing professional awareness by providing advice and support to all workers from all agencies

  • Conducting needs assessment through user consultation and audit, identifying gaps in service and making recommendations about service needs and development of services for families where there are issues of substance misuse

  • Increasing public awareness of the possible impact on children and young people of parental substance misuse.

Various informative and helpful substance misuse leaflets have been produced.  These are also available in Somali, Urdu and Arabic.

Safer Storage boxes have been produced and distributed to various agencies to promote the safe keeping of any medication.

The issue of substance misuse and its effects on children and families continues to dominate national and local agendas.
