Safeguarding Children & Young People at Events
Following consultation with people responsible for managing events (within the public and private sector), the Licensing Project, in partnership with the Sheffield City Council Directorate of Development, Environment and Leisure (DEL) and in consultation with South Yorkshire Police, has produced some best practice guidance (available to download at the bottom of this page). Its purpose is to prioritise the safety of children and young people at the planning and operational stages of events and it is intended to support and advise the people responsible for managing events.
The key factors of the guidance are:
- The safe management of alcohol at events
- A risk assessment tool – this is based upon audience profile and helps identify risks in relation to alcohol, criminal and sexual predators, unaccompanied young people, unacceptable/irresponsible behaviour
- A protocol for staff having temporary supervision of unaccompanied children
- The role of the Children’s Safeguarder
We aim to encourage the provision of a safe environment in which children and young people can learn to socialise and enjoy the diverse range of cultural, leisure and entertainment facilities Sheffield has to offer. We believe that by prioritising the safety of children and taking a proactive, preventive approach towards harm, everyone may have a safe end enjoyable experience enabling our city to retain its excellent reputation for safe and exciting events.
Junior Sport and Alcohol
The Child Protection in Licensing Task Group has produced two information leaflets, in consultation with the licensed trade and the Sheffield & Hallam District Football Association, to raise awareness of the risks of alcohol misuse at junior sports events. These are available to download at the bottom of this page.
