Children & Licensed Premises

The Licensing Project

This has been commissioned by the Sheffield Safeguarding Children Board (SSCB) to execute the statutory duties (conferred upon it as the 'Responsible Authority' by the Licensing Act 2003) to protect children from harm.

The Licensing Project's Remit

This is to support our Licensing Authority in meeting the core objectives of the legislation and to ensure that an effective and meaningful response is made in terms of safeguarding children at licensed premises. This is being achieved in the following ways:

  • Production of information leaflets
  • Presentations to people working in the licensed trade and professionals
  • Licencewatch Committee/forum meetings
  • Publicity/media events
  • Advocating the assignment of a ‘lead safeguarder’ for children’s issues
  • Safeguarding best practice guidance
  • Partnership working
  • Consultation, including advisory visits
  • Provision of training workshops

The project has attained a reputation for innovative work, locally and nationally and has been asked to share good practice and strategic approach with other Local Authorities.  The work being undertaken by the project has raised the awareness of safeguarding issues within the licensing and broader community, contributing to the evolution of a family friendly culture that is safe for children.
