KidsSafe in Sheffield

KidsSafe launch event at The Moor, Sheffield, 9 December 2007

During the summer the Sheffield Safeguarding Children Board has been working in partnership with Moor Sheffield, South Yorkshire Police and City Council Ambassadors to develop an exciting safer shopping scheme that will be launched at The Moor retail quarter on 9th December 2007.

The  Aim of the Scheme

The scheme aims to create a safer, child-friendly environment in which parents/carers can be reassured that, if their child is lost or vulnerable, there is a system in place to help safeguard children.

How the Scheme Works

The scheme works by displaying posters and stickers in shop windows so that children and families can identify which premises are ‘safe havens’

It’s free of charge and adults accompanying children may obtain a wristband for their child, to note the adult’s mobile phone number.

If a child is lost, they simply head for a premises displaying the scheme stickers, where staff are trained to strictly follow the Kidsafe protocol.

This system includes staff or parents contacting the dedicated emergency number; police and City Ambassadors using CCTV and radio communications to reunite the child with the adult.  The protocol also requires staff to keep a written record detailing all Kidsafe incidents.
