Safeguarding and Child Protection
We all have a responsibility to look out for children and young people, as a parent or family member, a friend or neighbour, an employer, or a paid or voluntary worker. All of us can help to safeguard children and young people if we are aware of their needs and take action if we have concerns.
Safeguarding: What is it?
Safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children means taking action:
- to protect children and young people from being mistreated
- to make sure their health or development is not impaired
- to make sure that they grow up in an environment that provides safe and effective care
- to help them to have the best possible life chances, and to enter adulthood successfully.
Child protection: What is it?
Child protection is a part of safeguarding. It means taking action to protect the small number of children and young people who are suffering, or are at risk of suffering, significant harm through child abuse.
Child abuse can happen to a child or young person at any age, from birth to when they have left school. It can happen in well-off or poor families; it can happen to children and young people from any ethnic background, to children and young people with or without disabilities.
Worried about a child?
If you are worried about a child or young person and wish to report or discuss your concerns that they are being abused or neglected, ring Sheffield (0114) 273 4855. You can ring 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

The Children's Workforce Development Council
The Children’s Workforce Development Council (CWDC) works for children and young people to make sure that the best possible staff are working together to achieve the same goals. We want to achieve what is best for children and young people, families and carers. You can find out more about this by logging on to the One Children’s Workforce Framework.
