Drug or Alcohol Misuse in Pregnancy

Drug and / or alcohol use in pregnancy

All women disclosing drug and / or alcohol misuse in pregnancy must be referred to the specialist midwife for drugs and alcohol (0114 226 8000 bleep 903). These cases are then brought for discussion at MAPLAG.

MAPLAG (multi-agency pregnancy liaison and assessment group) is a fortnightly meeting chaired and managed by the Sheffield Safeguarding Children Board (SSCB) Substance Misuse project. The group meets to discuss safeguarding children issues relating to women who experience difficulties with drugs and / or alcohol during pregnancy.

Why do MAPLAG meetings take place?
  • In accordance with the South Yorkshire Safeguarding Children Boards’ Child Protection Procedures 2007
  • To replace automatic referral to Children’s Social Care
  • To share and receive information from all necessary agencies
  • To monitor the progress of pregnant women, their partners and their unborn babies
  • To make recommendations about the level of risk in respect of safeguarding children issues
  • To make referrals to Children’s Social Care when necessary.
